Green Mountain Coffee Pods
All about Green Mountain coffee pods.
Green Mountain coffee pods are among the most popular brands of coffee pods available, and are manufactured by Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, a specialty coffee company based in Waterbury, Vermont. The company roasts 100% Arabica coffees and offers over 100 different coffee selections, including certified organic, Fair Trade Certified, estate, signature blends and flavored coffees that sell under the company’s and Newman’s Own Organics brands.
Green Mountain coffee pods – real coffee pods?
However, Green Mountain coffee pods aren’t really coffee pods at all, but in fact K-Cups, only working in Keurig’s K-Cup brewers. However, there are quite a few people out there that consider coffee pods and K-Cups similar enough to be called the same thing. Green Mountain likely won’t ever make a normal coffee pod, as you would find in the Home Cafe system, so the standard coffee pod machine will probably remain out of luck. This is because the company acquired Keurig, Incorporated, a manufacturer of single-cup brewing systems. Keurig sells its single-cup brewers in domestic wholesale and retail markets and directly to end consumers.
Starbucks and Green Mountain Coffee Pods
On March 10, 2011, Green Mountain Coffee and Starbucks announced a deal whereby Starbucks would sell its coffee in single-serve pods for brewing with Green Mountain’s Keurig machines. Starbucks would sell Keurig machines in their stores as part of the deal.
A K-Cup contains a hermetically sealed pre-measured coffee along with the filter in a K-Cup that looks like an oversized filter. There are over a hundred different blends of K-Cup coffee and a number of other brands than the big Green one.
Green Mountain Coffee Pods Machines
K-Cup machines are all designed to quickly brew a single cup of coffee, tea, hot chocolate, or other hot beverage. The grounds (or other brew material) are supplied in a prepared, single-serving unit, called a “K-Cup”. Once the machine has warmed up, the user inserts a K-Cup into the machine, places a mug under the spout, and invokes the brew feature; within 20 to 60 seconds, the beverage is ready. By omitting the K-Cup, users can also dispense a mug of hot water, which can then be used for instant soup or other hot drinks not available in the K-Cup form.
Keurig machines brew coffee or tea by piercing the foil seal on top of the plastic K-Cup with a spray nozzle, while simultaneously piercing the bottom of the K-cup with a discharge nozzle. Grounds contained inside the K-cup sit within a paper filter. A measured quantity of hot water is forced through the K-Cup, passing through the grounds and through the filter into the waiting cup or mug below. A brewing temperature of 192 degrees Fahrenheit (89 Celsius) is the default setting, with some models permitting users to reduce the temperature somewhat, per preference.
Green Mountain coffee pods come in 300 varieties of coffee, tea and hot chocolate, and a new line of blends made to be brewed over ice. The cost varies, but is often about 60 cents a cup, or $25 a pound of coffee.
In addition to prepackaged filters, Keurig also produces a reusable filter called the My-K Cup, which allows conventional ground coffee to be used. The My K-Cup is an environmentally friendly alternative to disposable Green Mountain coffee pods, but compatible only with home brewer models; it also allows the use of coffees not available in K-cup form, which can drastically reduce both the expense and waste of K-cups. In addition, some companies have created lids allowing users to reuse spent K-cups.
Remember: Green Mountain coffee pods = K-cups.
